Was just in my lab trying to remember what I did to get round this. I had the same problem a few weeks ago when I got the machine. Same fix applied chose ATA, This was for the E6400 ruggadised with Solid state Hard drive. Had BSOD when booting to XP CD as well in non ATA mode.
We did a mass order from Dell last year and we could request our bios preferences if you have that option
from your supplier.
Also had the same prob (ATA) with the XT2 tablet.
