Here's the situation. We picked up the License Compliance Suite at my company due to some, well, license compliance issues. The server has been setup for quite some time, the agent has been installed on all our clients, etc... the main thing left for me to do is build any custom reports, which is just going to take some time to learn since I'm no SQL guru. In any case, I'm becoming frustrated because my manager (and our company in general) seems to think Altiris (and similar products) just 'run themselves'... they vastly underestimate the amount of daily/weekly/monthly time required to keep things up and running smoothly. Sure, things won't usually just stop working, but I always prefer to keep things patched and up to date rather than wait until something goes wrong or have to do major upgrades because we're so out of date that we're not supported anymore... you get the idea. Anyway, I now find myself in charge of... Active Directory/Group Policy WSUS Tivoli Storage Manager I.P. Monitor Altiris McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator all physical server/bladecenter/SAN hardware... and that's just the day to day stuff. I can't even start in on the "special projects". I'm overwhelmed. So I'm trying to put together a reasonable estimate of how much time each of these systems requires to keep it running properly... and since Altiris is the latest product to be thrown on my plate, I thought I'd get some input from people who have been at it longer than I have. We have approximately 600 PCs and 50 servers, a handful of thin clients, and a number of other devices (IP Phones, Printers, other peripherals) that are either currently or will be tracked using Altiris Asset Management. I know there are a lot of things I can automate, which, of course, I haven't been able to find the time to explore, and that the administration time can very significantly based on how much of that I setup. Same thing is true for any product. But, for now, I'm just trying to get a rough idea of how much time a guy in my situation should expect to be spending administering this product. Thanks in advance for any feedback (and for allowing me to vent!
