Very confused
Hi All.
We are looking at Altiris for a few features but there are so many applications and solutions that we have no idea what we need.
Our requirements are:
- Deploy Windows OS to desktops and servers. In the future we would also like to deploy Linux
- Deploy Windows based applications to desktops.
- Asset management of hardware. In the future software.
So based on these requirements, what do we need from Altiris?

Can you clarify what you mean by "Asset management"? I only ask because I have had people in the past have different opinions.
Deployment Server will get you what you need for 1 and 2.

Thanks for the reply Nick. We want to be able to record all asset information for all workstations and servers. Name, serial#, user etc.

Based on that answer you will most likely be satisfied with Inventory Solution as it gets granular hardware, software and user based information as well as the ability to leverage custom inventory collection capabilities via wmi queries and registry data mining.

Migration Suite is a choice as well. It comes with Deployment Server and Inventory Solution.

Here is some information from Symantec regarding these products:
Inventory Solution:

Deployment Solution:

I agree with Nick about the suite you can buy. You can always call Altiris (1.888.252.5551) and talk to sales over there. Be careful though, they may try to sell you a suite bigger than what you need.
Inventory solution is a great tool. Like Nick said, it gets to the absolute bottom of your enterprise. It has to be configured properly. For that I recommend to contact one of the many Altiris partners (my personal preference is Intuitive Technology Group; www.be-intuitive.com) that can come out to your site, once you have purchased the product and install all of it with the correct SQL configuration and settings for the Altiris Inventory Solution. Deployment Solution is really easy to install.
