Which version of DS do you plan to use to migrate to Windows 7?
Just curious which version of DS you plan to use when you migrate to Windows 7.

Right now I plan to use DS 6.9 SP3, which is in beta right now and should be available in about 5 weeks. It adds support for a bunch of operating systems, including Windows 7 (x86, x64). We also need it for the Server 2008 R2 and ESX 4 support.
I don't really plan on using DS7 until version 7.1 is released later this year. I've been told by Symantec that a September time-frame is possible for that release.

We decided to implement a new technology requiring mailing bootable CDs and emailing the end users the CD KEY to enter upon registration.
We are hoping for a 90% success rating with this new automation.

I work for a school district that has been an Altiris company for almost eight years now.
We've had some rather major issues going to some of the new release prior to a major update coming out for those new releases.
We most likely won't be going to Windows 7 until next year this time at best. If we don't make that migration in a years time we should have enough time to evaluate DS 7.x over the winter allowing us to make that migration instead.
Slow and steady. That has served us well in the past. Only dire emergencies get us moving onto new products quickly.

well just going to DS 6.9 sp2 was a pain.... from sp1...
so going ds 7 I dont see happening anytime.. then to see how pxe wont be there.... so gonna be a big learning curve as i have not seen NS or DS 7 yet...
we are using way too many solutions right now which can hinder upgrades.... Altiris keeps on telling me how solutions are working better in NS7...
but then when we go through the solutions that we are using.. they say that they have about 30% of what we need converted.... well that isnt gonna work!!!!!!!!!!

I'm surprised that 25% are saying DS7 to roll out Win7. I would say my company is at least a years away from going to 7 and I'm going to wait until SP1 to put in some serious time into CMS7. I can't see us going to Win7 for two years.

Windows 7 is nothing more than a feature pack for Vista.
If you are running Vista now, then you should have no issues going to Win7. Nothing has really changed under the hood. All the people raving about faster performance are only noticing the faster startup/shutdown times. Benchmarks of games on the two operating systems are the same.
To get back to the original question, as DS 7 has no PXE support at the moment we will be using DS 6.9 SP2.
Why they (Symantec) decided to release a product that is only half finished is beyond me.

I can say this about the company I'm with. We went through this whole discussion on weather to go to W7 so I made a Vista image for them to test with. Well after 8 or so meetings and 5 mths passing the vista image has yet to be used on any of the pcs and they aren't thinking about going to W7 for atleast 2 yrs. Not to sure about DS7 since I have 6.9 sp2 working like clock work I don't want to chance it unless I know its right.

In our environment, we have no plans to go to Windows 7 until maybe 2011. So, by then CMS7 should be out and ready to support all of our needs. So technically, we will be deploying with CMS7 just on the fact we are waiting that long to go to Windows 7.

Complete rollout of Windows 7
We've just completed a rollout of Windows 7. We've upgraded 250 clients from XP to Win7 using DS6.9 SP3. It went very smoothly and there were very few support calls following upgrade.
