Arrow My experiences with Altiris Agent for PocketPC

Just some information about my experiences with Altiris Agent for PocketPC for anyone interested...

We've Just started using the Handheld Suite to deploy about 18 handheld devices. We installed the agent using the recommended method on our handhelds (using Agent Manager software) via MS Active Sync.

We are using the latest version of Windows Mobile (WM6 I think) and these are HP IPaq's. Nothing in the documentation says that it works with WM6, I think you're supposed to use WM5, but it seems to work anyway!

Initially, the agent installed into Program Files\Altiris\ on the handheld but didn't start reporting straight away to the NS.

We saw errors in the log file (on the handheld) by browsing through Active Sync and looking in the Altiris folder, you'll see a logs folder (same as the PC version). The agent was trying to contact the NS but didn't have permission to access the location that it needed to on the NS - it seemed to be an authentication problem (since the handheld cannot be joined to the domain).

We usually use domain authentication in IIS for our NS. We had to tweak a certain folder on our NS to use only basic authentication and then the handheld agents started reporting normally.

All the information is now there inside the console but the funny thing is that when you double-click on the Handheld resource in the Altiris Console, it has got two Summary tabs. One Summary tab containing a very basic inventory as you would normally see and the other Summary tab containing the Handheld inventory but not correctly formatted.

The information is all there and correct it just looks funny (web page not formatted correctly). Has anyone else experienced this? I think we can live with it, it's just a minor annoyance!

The handhelds are going to 18 remote sites that all have a wireless network - so time will tell if they continue reporting properly.

PocketVNC for PocketPC

Just on a seperate note. I know that there is no CarbonCopy or PCAnyware solution for PocketPC but I did find PocketVNC.

We already use VNC in our organisation and I downloaded the demo from the web site and it works really well.

SmartLab Web Portal

Might be useful for some!
