Active Directory import of security groups and computers

Hi!

We are an Altiris Silver Partner in Sweden that has a solution to a general issue with the Altiris NS Active Directory import tool. Lots of users/admins want to import security groups and the containing computers from AD to NS collections. This can not be done through the NS Active Directory import tool.

We have developed a small application, called AD2NS that can run as a scheduled task or through a GUI. AD2NS connects by LDAP to AD. It synchronizes security groups and the member computers from a given LDAP path (or whole domain) into NS collections. It only imports computers from AD that are known to the NS server/database in order to keep the collections authentic to NS.

AD2NS can be found at the following link:
http://www.ovik.office.se/officepaypal/ad2ns.aspx

Altiris (EMEA) currently recommend AD2NS to customers requiring this feature.

Tell me I'm not the only one already salivating over this?

Thanks for sharing Jens!

If I hadn't started a new job this week I would have jumped all over that.

Hi!

We have just released an updated version of AD2NS, version 1.2, the import/synchronization has been optimized to run faster. We have fixed a BUG where bogus GUIDs could be created under certain situations in the previous version.

The new version can be downloaded at the following link.
http://www.ovik.office.se/downloads/ad2ns.zip

Activation of the software (after five days eval) can be done here.

Hmmm...$116, looks like a good investment to me!

Just downloaded the trial, will test it today.

I think that the newest betas of AD Connector on the http://beta.altiris.com site also integrate this functionality.

Jens: You should ask them for some kickbacks for implementing this feature ahead of Altiris

So the new AD Integration Component is supposed to do this too, but I can't get it to work due to having several groups in different OUs with the same name (none of which I am trying to import!); it hangs on it everytime. Ah well...

The below was my 1st post on this site but to do with the same altiris component as above - same component but slightly different outcome

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Currently using the Latest Altiris Microsoft Active Directory Integration Component.

I created an Microsoft Active Directory Import rule and successfully imported ad structure and computers into the Resources Management view. Which was great untill the computers started removing from the Resources Management View even though the computers are still active in active directory. I have no schedules running.

I have searched for an answer everywhere and cannot see this happening to anyone else. I've even posted it on the altiris forums and have not had a single response except from my self, .

http://forums.altiris.com/messageview.aspx?catid=12&threadid=32994&enterthre ad=y
Any help would be most appreciated as it's starting to do my head in now

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you can see on the Altiris Forums jharings has got Altiris to contact me for support on this issue, I have recieved an e-mail from them confirming they are looking into this and will give me a ring if they have any questions - - hopefully we'll get somewhere with this

When you are filling out the Database settings for AD2NS are you guys using AD credentials or SQL credentials? The owner is our SQL Admin account but I get this error

Database: Cannot Open Database requested in login 'Altiris'. Login fails. Login Failed for user 'xxxxxx'

If I try to use an AD or Local admin account I get

Database: Login failed for user 'xxxxxx'.

I'm at a lost at what the difference is.

When you setup the database login you must use a SQL User account (SQL Login). The account need "Data Read" and "Data Write" on the database.

What SQL version are you using?

If you are using a SQL User account and still get the error, can you try to create an ordinary ODBC connection to the database with that SQL User and see it ODBC works?

Had to put my Database server in quotes for it to work. "xxxxx\xxxxx"

Thanks

Finally got it working but I guess there is no way to import groups based with users?
